Who is not familiar with the term ‘Wellness’ – but did you know that this concept already played an important role in the sixteenth century already? Indeed, the term was not yet established, but nevertheless it was already understood at that time how care of the body, and well-being, could be connected.

Already in the medicinal book of Philippine Welser – composed by her mother Anna Welser in the sixteenth century – a great variety of applications were recommended in order to bring body and spirit into balance.

For our thematic tours ‘Wellness à la Philippine Welser’, we have drawn attention to a particularly special historical site: the bath of Philippine Welser. It is not only known as the oldest preserved Renaissance bath, but in addition it is also located in the first museum of the world – at Ambras Castle.

The bath as an oasis of well-being

Philippine Welser, the daughter of an Augsburg merchant, was not of suitable social class for Archduke Ferdinand II, the son of the Habsburg emperor. For his beloved he caused Ambras Castle to be expanded. In the course of these renovations the bathing rooms were built, rooms which can absolutely be compared with a spa and wellness landscape of today. They consist of a sweat bath, bathing facility with bathtub, changing room and room for relaxation – that is, everything that is good for body and soul!

The bath of Philippine Welser at Ambras Castle was therefore always a place of well-being, relaxation and getting together.
