The history of rulership has been dominated for centuries primarily by men. Frequently, women were unable to free themselves from the prescribed roles for their sex and status. Nevertheless, there were women who energetically shaped their life and who were significant as networkers and regents.

What was a knight, actually? A nobleman who proved himself at the tournament, a warrior who rode out against enemy lines, or even any ‘soldier’ who carried a weapon? Reality and fiction diverge widely from each other: perhaps this is a reason why knights are so fascinating…
World trip
Exotica were the ‘non plus ultra’ of the sixteenth century. Wondrous things from the newly discovered regions overseas came to Europe for the first time. In the Chamber of Art and Wonders we ‘journey’ to exotic lands and cultures with the aid of valuable objects of mother-of-pearl, rhinoceros horn, coconut, and tortoiseshell, amongst others.
Love, lust, and passion
Emperor Maximilian I was not the only ruler to make advantageous marriages for his children and grandchildren. Marriages were always very important for dynastic reasons. Yet: how did the men and women who were affected get along? Were all marriages unhappy, or were there also thoroughly harmonious unions? Biographies and anecdotes tell about lust and frustration amongst the high aristocracy.
Profile – portrait – image
Princely portraits were revered by their audience as substitutes of the actual person; at the same time, they should keep their remembrance alive for posterity. With the aid of selected princely portraits, the development of this courtly production of the image will be presented.
Beauties. Intellectuals. Wondrous beings
In a stimulating tour through the Kunstkammer and the Chamber of Curiosities, portraits of beauties, intellectuals, and wondrous beings will be presented. During this experience, the 3-D reconstruction generated by the Innsbruck University Clinic depicting the portrait of the Hungarian nobleman Gregor Baci will be presented.
